Know Your Rights!

All six UMMAP bargaining units are officially recognized as of June 13, 2024.  As an officially recognized union employee, you have rights.  The best way to protect your rights as a UMMAP Allied Health Professional is to be informed.  Below are details about your rights and how to request union representation.

Your Weingarten Rights

As a union employee, you have the right to fair treatment and representation during disciplinary actions. If you suspect a meeting with management is leading to a disciplinary, you can request union representation.  Do be shy about invoking your Weingarten Rights!  Learn more here.

Just Cause

Just Cause means our employer must adhere to a new standard when disciplining or terminating an employee.  The reasons must be fair and just and meet seven specific tests.

UMMAP Grievance Procedures

November 2023, UMMAP and Michigan Medicine signed off on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) regarding grievance procedures.  At the time, some of us were recognized and two more bargaining units were preparing for card check.   While we had Weingarten Rights, there wasn’t a contract to spell out discipline and grievance.  This MOU spelled out the grievance procedures and added just cause.  Below are details spelling out the steps and timelines for filing a grievance.

Step 1
  • Notify your immediate supervisor of a dispute within 21 calendar days
  • A meeting for resolution scheduled with you and UMMAP Stewards within 14 days.
  • Receive a verbal answer 7 days following the meeting.
  • If the verbal answer is not satisfactory, we move to Step 2.
Step 2
  • The Union submits a written grievance to the employee’s supervisor within 21 calendar days after receiving verbal answer.
  • Written grievance includes the name of the grievant, date, facts, and details of the alleged violation(s) and the requested remedy.
  • Management will schedule a Step 2 meeting within 14 calendar days after receiving the written grievance.
  • Management will have a written response to the grievance 14 calendar days after the grievance meeting.
Step 3
  • If the grievance is not resolved, it can be appealed to the Michigan Medicine Director of Labor Relations, or designee within 14 calendar of Step 2 response.
  • Grievances concerning discharge, disciplinary layoff, a written reprimand in lieu of a disciplinary layoff, alleged sex harassment or alleged unlawful discrimination will begin at Step 3.
  • The Director of Labor Relations, or designee, will schedule a Step 3 meeting within 14 calendar.
  • Administration will write a response within 14 calendar days of the date of the Step 3 meeting.
Arbitration

If no resolution is approved by the Executive Board, it may be appealed by the Union to arbitration at any time within 30 calendar days after receiving the Step 3 response.
